Day six: Funchal city tour
O último dia na ilha foi dedicado ao centro da cidade do Funchal. Depois de fazer o check out do Hotel deixamos o carro estacionado no Parque do centro e percorremos a zona velha. O primeiro ponto de paragem foi o colorido mercado dos Lavradores no núcleo histórico de Santa Maria. Os clicks na máquina fotográfica sucederam-se vertiginosamente, ao mote das cores das flores, frutos, legumes e outros produtos típicos apregoados por vendedoras trajadas com o típico fato madeirense.
The last day on the island was dedicated to the city center of Funchal. After checking out the hotel we left the car parked in the center and walk through the old town. The first stop was the colorful Farmers Market in the historic center of Santa Maria. The clicks on the camera followed up dramatically, raised by the colors of flowers, fruits, vegetables and other typical products touted by saleswomen dressed in typical Madeira's costumes.

Com o apetite bem escancarado descemos as ruas e vielas da zona velha da cidade. Aqui encontramos o projeto Portas Pintadas. Um projeto de arte pública criado para dinamizar uma das zonas mais emblemáticas da baixa funchalense.
With the appetite wide open we gap the streets and alleys of the old city. Here we found the project Painted Doors. A public art project designed to streamline one of the most emblematic areas of downtown Funchal.
Caminhar por estas ruas é como caminhar por entre uma galeria de arte permanente, com portas pintadas por vários artistas madeirenses, como o arquitecto Paulo David e a decoradora e comendadora Nini Andrade Silva. Outro ponto de paragem foi o Madeira Story Centre, o antigo cinema hoje transformado num museu interativo, que relata a história da Madeira desde a origem da ilha até aos nossos dias.
Walking these streets is like walking through a permanent art gallery, with doors painted by various artists from Madeira, as the architect PauloDavid and interior designer and Commander Nini Andrade Silva. The next stop was Madeira Story Centre, the former movie theater now transformed into an interactive museum tells the story of Madeira from the origin of the island to this day.

Pela Avenida do Mar seguimos em direção ao Palácio de S. Lourenço mesmo em frente à marina. Este edifício do tempo dos Filipes, serviu como residência de capitães e governadores da ilha.
Through the Avenida do Mar we head to the Palace of S. Lourenço right in front of the marina. The building from the time of the Phillips served as residence of captains and governors of the island.

Mesmo no cimo da rua afigura-se a estátua do descobridor da ilha, João Gonçalves Zarco e a seus pés um pedestal com 4 painéis que evocam a Gesta do Descobrimento: Povoamento, Conquista, Sabedoria e Evangelização. Esta é apenas uma das várias homenagens prestada ao navegador.
At the top of the street we could see the statue of the discoverer of the island, João Gonçalves Zarco and at his feet a pedestal with four panels representing allegorical elements relating to Discovery: Settlement, Conquest, Wisdom and Evangelism. This is just one of many tributes paid to the discoverer.
Daqui se avista a Sé, monumento da época da colonização que permaneceu até hoje intacto. Esta obra constitui a mais emblemática obra do período Manuelino na Ilha da Madeira, conjuga os materiais locais com saberes antigos e modernos. Do seu interior rico, entre estátuas e pituras destaco os assentos e apoios de braços, onde estão retratadas cenas da vida madeirense e a Cruz Processional oferecida pelo Rei D. Manuel I, considerada uma das obras-primas da ourivesaria Manuelina.
From here you can see the Cathedral, monument of the period of colonization that remained intact until today. This project was the most emblematic work of the Manueline period in Madeira Island, it combines local materials with ancient and modern knowledge. From its rich interior, including statues and paintings I highlight the seats and armrests, in which are depicted scenes from the life in Madeira and the Processional Cross offered by King Manuel I, considered one of the masterpieces of Manueline jewelery.

O fim da tarde foi passado na pacata cidade de Santa Cruz, onde se situa o aeroporto. Deste município fazem parte as ilhas desertas. Situada na solarenga encosta sul da fantástica Ilha da Madeira, esta região foi das primeiras a ser descobertas. O seu topónimo deve-se ao facto dos navegadores ao aqui chegar terem feito uma cruz em cepos derrubados que penduraram numa árvore, assim se deu nome ao lugar da Santa Cruz.
A tranquilidade manteve-se até hoje. Aqui pareceu-me o melhor lugar para terminar a viagem, já com a nostalgia das aventuras vividas na ilha. Santa Cruz torna-se especialmente cativante por parecer esquecida pelos turistas. Não se ouvem os disparos das máquinas, nem os passos de outros transeuntes, não se ouvem carros, nem as diversas línguas dos turistas. Apenas as ondas do mar e o som do vento a embalar as palmeiras. A mim embalam-me as memórias que guardo na minha mente como arca do tesouro que recebe cada jóia, cada pedra preciosa...
The afternoon was spent in the quiet town of Santa Cruz, where the airport is located. This council includes the Desertas Islands. Set on the sunny southern slope of the fantastic island of Madeira, this region was the first to be discovered. Its toponym is due to the fact that when the the discoveres arrived they made a cross which they hung in a tree.
The tranquility lasted until today. Here it seemed to me the best place to end the trip, with the nostalgia of adventures on the island. Santa Cruz becomes especially attractive because it seems forgotten by tourists. here are not heard the shots of the cameras, nor the footsteps of other pedestrians, the noise of the cars, nor the various languages of other tourists. Only the waves and the sound of the wind rocking the palms. In me cradle me the memories that I keep in my mind as the treasury that receives each jewel, each gemstone ...
